My name is Terry Dunn and I am a local maths tutor serving Stevenage and the surrounding area up to a radius of 5 miles. I specialise in teaching maths at Key Stage 3 (secondary) and GCSE, foundation, and higher levels. I don’t teach any other academic subjects. I will take students from year 7 up to year 11, that’s 11 to 16 years olds. Lessons are held at your home or mine after school or at weekends, weekly or as required. They can be 60, 90, or 120 minutes in length.
The benefits of 1-to-1 tuition
There are many reasons why students need help with maths. Very often, they lose confidence and get behind with their learning. Tuition can fill knowledge gaps caused by illness or other unforeseen circumstances. Students often want to improve their grades or move to a higher set at school. Or maybe they are just not achieving their potential and need some help.
Private tuition can even bring enjoyment to maths and encourage independent learning, which is difficult to achieve in a class of 30 or more pupils.
Why would you choose me?
I have been teaching full-time as a private tutor for 5 years, and during that time I have taught over 40 students in the Stevenage area, helping them to improve their maths. I have a profile on many of the UK’s tutoring websites.
I often help students improve their school ranking, for example, after starting at GCSE foundation-level with one student, her school moved her to higher-level mid-term. Here are some comments from parents,
Terry has been tutoring my son for 3 weeks now and is reliable, patient and covers a lot in the hour session
Terry is very good and considerate tutor and really helping our daughter with her maths
My son has thrived with the one to one maths tutorials he has had with Terry. Terry explains all in a manner that facilitates good understanding. He interacts really well with my son and provides very helpful positive reinforcement and feedback. I would recommend him highly
What is my teaching style?
This depends on the student’s needs. I will often focus on the curriculum content if the student has many gaps in their knowledge, but I also like to use lots of worked examples to illustrate how to apply the methods, rules, and formulas of maths. So there is a strong focus on answering questions and solving maths problems.
I am familiar with the National Curriculum and follow it closely. As well as curriculum content, I will do school homework, prepare the student for mid-term and end-of-term tests. And to help students prepare for the GCSE exams I will often work through past papers and plenty of exam-style questions.
I’m good at explaining difficult topics and making maths easy to understand. I’m patient and coach the student, working at a speed they are comfortable with. I set homework for them to do before the next lesson, and I mark it during the lesson. This gives them valuable practice and lets me know if the topic needs more explaining or we need to work through more questions until the student ‘gets it’.
What does tuition cost?
Both the weekly or as-required price is £30 for a one-hour lesson. If the lesson is at your home I charge an additional £5 for my travel costs. I am security cleared to work in Government, which includes a DBS and criminal records check.
This is a good price to pay for a professional, qualified tutor that specialises in maths and is helping your son or daughter succeed and achieve their target grades.
Am I qualified to teach?
I have an honours degree in Engineering from Brunel University. I studied maths to degree level and scored more than 90% in my final year maths papers. I worked as a professional trainer for Cable & Wireless for many years, where I ran instructor-led courses and individual coaching for customers and clients.
My personal skills include the ability to explain complex and difficult topics in an easy to understand way. I am a good speaker, writer, and listener. As you might expect from a mathematician and technologist, I am organised and thorough in my approach. You will also find I am reliable, punctual, and flexible.
